Malawi is edging towards a digitally transformed nation. Being a youthful nation and recognizing the threats that internet usage brings to the youths, #MACRA in partnership with various child protection NGOs conducted school outreach activities across the country with the aim of equipping school going children with necessary digital skills.
Speaking in Mangochi at St Martin Community Day Secondary School, a Form 4 learner stated how he browses the internet but was never taught on how to navigate the digital space safely. The teachers at the school expressed optimism on the positive impact of the outreach program as some of the students had fallen victim to online fraud and scams.
During the interaction with the students, it was clear that the skills acquired will go a long way in ensuring that the students are safe online. The team also visited Mangochi Secondary school where the students attested to having experienced some forms of cyber bullying. The students expressed gratitude to the team for informing them on the proper reporting procedures in relation to cyber threats and crimes.
