Malawi rated highly in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index

The fifth edition of the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024 has rated Malawi highly with a score of 80% from 36% in 2020.

The report measures the commitment of countries to cybersecurity in the context of measures across the following five pillars: Legal, Technical, Organizational, Capacity development and Cooperation.

Reacting to the news, MACRA Director General Daud Elvin Suleman pointed at a projected higher rating: “Am excited that Malawi has moved greatly, I hope Next report within 3 to 4 years we should be a minimum of 95% score and role model tier.”

The report has data collected between 2023 and 2024 from 194 countries including Malawi.

Specifically, this edition of the Global Cybersecurity Index features record engagement by countries and was the most rigorous yet. Each country submission was independently verified for accuracy, against consistent baselines and definitions.

The report further acknowledges that many countries have been increasingly targeting their cybersecurity efforts toward vulnerable and underrepresented populations.

However, it concedes that, while the rise in cybersecurity initiatives was encouraging, a crucial next step for Member States lies in ensuring that these efforts are effective. To attain the positive results, MACRA has proactively championed innovative, creative and policy formulation to enhance the sector.

The report released by the ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for many matters related to information and communication technologies, indicates an average of growth of 27% since 2020.As.
