Domain slamming is a scam in which the offending domain name registrar attempts to trick domain owners into switching from their existing registrar to theirs, under the pretense that the customer is simply renewing their subscription to their current registrar.
Malawi CERT warns about seemingly urgent emails from a ‘Domain Registry in China’, claiming that another company, Rui Tai Ltd, intended to register several domain names closely associated with a domain.
The sender, posing as Mike Zhang, Service Manager, expresses concern that these registrations might conflict with trademark rights in China and seeks clarification on whether Rui Tai Ltd is an authorized partner
The objective is not identity theft but to coerce companies into registering domain names they don’t need, at inflated prices, with the scammer’s registrar service. Malawi CERT recommends organizations to ignore these emails and report to their domain registrar if they fall victim.
